An Academy Award now lives at Peregrine!

Dundas, ON – Colin Doncaster, co-owner of Peregrine Labs wins an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement for the development, prototyping and promotion of technologies and workflows for deep compositing. The award was presented on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.

Colin Doncaster – who shares the award with 4 others – was honoured for the contributions to early advancements in key deep compositing features such as layer and holdout-order independence, spatial and intra-element colour correction, post-render depth of field, and precise blending of complex layer edges.

“This award is a great honor, as well as validation for hard work over the last 18 years,” Colin Doncaster said. “Innovation is what drives progress but more often than not getting others to believe in a good idea takes way more effort than it should — it’s great to see that our industry has recognized the research, effort and results of those involved and the award will help everyone involved push boundaries even further.”

Doncaster started Peregrine Labs with his wife and co-owner Kirsten Bodenstedt and settled in Dundas, ON three years ago to do exactly that – innovate and push the boundaries while striving to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

“We started this business as a lifestyle choice,” Kirsten Bodenstedt said. “we wanted to have a family life where we could engage in our sons’ lives on a daily basis, not only on weekends.” A concept that has certainly paid off looking at both their international cliental and the recent Academy Award.

As good as the movie business has been to them, Colin Doncaster sees a future with even wider uses for the deep compositing technology. “We love the visual effects and animation business, but also see a future in biotech and data analysis,” he said. “Visual effects and animation is an exciting niche but our future lies further afield.”
